Disconnect (2012) | Radio Times

The internet age comes under the microscope in this portmanteau film that, perhaps inevitably given its technological focus, became dated as soon as it wrapped. An unexpected choice for Henry Alex Rubin, who previously directed the paraplegic extreme-sports documentary Murderball, Disconnect nevertheless shares that film's concern with the consequences of reckless behaviour. Cyber-bullying, internet fraud and online porn all come under the spotlight, and, as is usual with multi-storyline projects, some strands are better than others (one involving a couple in pursuit of the man who stole their virtual identities is not only dull but wholly unrealistic). Still, there are insightful moments, and a section concerning a schoolboy who is hounded by thoughtless (but not evil) bullies retains its relevance - just as the film, as a whole, reminds us of the necessity of human contact.
